Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Veterinary Breeding Specialist with strong hands-on experience in large-scale livestock farms and commercial breeding operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and improving livestock reproductive performance, implementing breeding programs, monitoring animal fertility, and ensuring high conception, pregnancy, calving/kidding, and offspring survival rates.
The ideal candidate must have proven experience working in a large farm environment, preferably with high-volume livestock populations, and should be comfortable working directly with animals, farm teams, veterinarians, and production management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Breeding & Reproductive Management
- Develop, implement, and monitor livestock breeding and reproductive programs.
- Manage breeding schedules based on animal health, age, production performance, and reproductive history.
- Conduct reproductive examinations and fertility assessments.
- Monitor estrus/heat cycles and identify animals ready for breeding.
- Coordinate and perform or supervise Artificial Insemination (AI) programs.
- Monitor conception, pregnancy, calving/kidding, and post-partum performance.
- Maintain accurate breeding and reproductive records.
- Identify repeat breeders and animals with reproductive problems and recommend appropriate action.
- Support genetic improvement and selection programs.
2. Veterinary & Herd Health
- Conduct routine reproductive health examinations.
- Diagnose and manage reproductive disorders, infertility, abortions, dystocia, uterine infections, and related conditions.
- Develop preventive veterinary programs for breeding animals.
- Monitor herd health and identify diseases that may affect fertility and reproductive performance.
- Coordinate vaccination, deworming, treatment, and disease-control programs.
- Ensure proper biosecurity practices are followed throughout the farm.
3. Large Farm Operations
- Work closely with farm management to manage breeding activities across a large livestock population.
- Supervise and guide veterinary technicians, animal handlers, and breeding personnel.
- Establish standard operating procedures for breeding and reproductive activities.
- Monitor animal housing, nutrition, hygiene, and environmental conditions affecting fertility.
- Coordinate with nutrition and production teams to optimize reproductive performance.
- Participate in farm inspections and animal welfare assessments.
4. Pregnancy & Maternity Management
- Conduct pregnancy diagnosis using appropriate veterinary methods.
- Maintain pregnancy monitoring schedules.
- Monitor pregnant animals and identify high-risk cases.
- Assist with or supervise difficult births and emergency reproductive cases.
- Develop appropriate pre- and post-partum care programs.
- Monitor newborn animal health and survival rates.
5. Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Track and analyze key reproductive indicators, including:
- Conception Rate
- Pregnancy Rate
- Calving/Kidding Rate
- Services per Conception
- Days Open
- Repeat Breeder Rate
- Abortion Rate
- Stillbirth Rate
- Offspring Survival Rate
- Breeding Efficiency
- Prepare regular breeding and reproductive performance reports.
- Identify performance gaps and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate animal identification, breeding, treatment, and reproductive records.
6. Team Leadership & Training
- Train farm staff on heat detection, animal handling, breeding procedures, hygiene, and reproductive management.
- Supervise breeding technicians and veterinary support staff.
- Ensure all breeding procedures are conducted safely and according to veterinary standards.
- Promote proper animal welfare and handling practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM/BVSc or equivalent).
- Additional specialization or certification in Animal Reproduction, Theriogenology, Livestock Production, or Veterinary Reproductive Medicine is highly desirable.
- Valid veterinary registration/license where applicable.
- Minimum 5–8 years of relevant experience in livestock veterinary and breeding operations.
- Strong preference for candidates with experience in large commercial farms / mega farms / intensive livestock operations.
- Proven hands-on experience in livestock reproductive management and breeding programs.
- Experience with Artificial Insemination (AI) and pregnancy diagnosis is strongly preferred.
