An automotive upholsterer specializes in repairing, replacing, and customizing the interior materials of vehicles—primarily seats, headliners, carpets, door panels, and trim. The role blends craftsmanship with technical knowledge of vehicle interiors.
Core Responsibilities
- Seat and interior repair: Fix worn, torn, or damaged upholstery in cars, trucks, buses, or specialty vehicles.
- Reupholstering: Remove old fabric/leather and install new materials, ensuring proper fit and finish.
- Custom interior work: Design and fabricate bespoke interiors (e.g., luxury stitching, unique materials, color schemes).
- Pattern making and cutting: Measure and cut materials precisely using templates or custom patterns.
- Foam shaping and padding: Repair or replace cushioning to restore comfort and structure.
- Headliner and carpet installation: Replace or repair roof linings and flooring.
- Use of tools and machinery: Operate sewing machines, staple guns, adhesives, and cutting tools.
- Customer consultation: Understand client requirements, provide material recommendations, and estimate costs.
Skills and Qualifications
- Proficiency in industrial sewing and upholstery techniques
- Knowledge of materials such as leather, vinyl, fabric, and foam
- Attention to detail and manual dexterity
- Ability to read patterns and technical drawings
- Basic understanding of vehicle interior construction
