Summary
Responsible for treating conditions of the body’s thorax (chest) area, including the esophagus, lungs, mediastinum (the area between the lungs), trachea, and diaphragm. Thoracic surgeons treat conditions such as chest wall tumors, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, and other end-stage lung diseases.
Education/Qualifications
Required:
• Basic medical degree from a recognized institution
• Post-qualification certification
• Qualifications from:
North America, Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand
• USA:
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
• Canada:
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (RCPS-C)
• UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
• Australia and New Zealand:
Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
• Western Europe:
Equivalent certification to the above
Experience Post
– Qualifications:
• Minimum three (3) years after board/equivalent certification in USA, Canada, Ireland, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and France (DES).
• Minimum five (5) years after board/equivalent certification in Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Greece, and France (DIS).
License:
Current and in good standing medical license to practice in the country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities
• Provide high-quality patient care in all aspects of general thoracic surgery according to approved clinical privileges.
• Offer consultation services (inpatient and emergency room) promptly as per hospital policy.
• Ensure timely and accurate completion of medical records.
• Provide on-call services, maintaining availability and response times as per hospital policy.
• Conduct daily rounds to identify patients ready for discharge and ensure discharge orders are written at least 24 hours prior.
• Perform other clinical duties related to the specialty as assigned.
Academic Responsibilities
• Provide orientation, bedside training, and supervision to interns, residents, and fellows.
• Participate in departmental educational activities and conferences.
• Maintain professional knowledge and continuing education.
Research Responsibilities
• Engage in clinical, basic, and translational research projects to advance knowledge and improve postgraduate education.
Administrative Responsibilities
• Undertake administrative duties assigned by the Head of Section or Chairman.
• Participate in departmental and hospital committees and activities.
• Contribute to resource optimization within the department and hospital.
• Comply with hospital bylaws, rules, regulations, and policies.
• Engage in ongoing education and training.
• Follow all hospital policies and perform other duties as assigned.
