Section Head – Molecular & Translational Pathology

Role Summary

The Section Head provides leadership and medical direction for Molecular and Translational Pathology services. The role oversees diagnostic quality, laboratory operations, test development, and compliance with accreditation standards. It also supports clinical consultation, staff training, research activities, and development of advanced molecular and bioinformatics capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Diagnostic Leadership

  • Provide medical direction on test selection, methodologies, and clinical appropriateness.
  • Deliver diagnostic interpretation and consultative services within granted privileges.
  • Review and validate critical results and unexpected laboratory findings.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with laboratory accreditation and regulatory standards (JCI, CAP, AABB, CBAHI, ISO 15189).
  • Maintain and continuously improve the quality of services and patient safety initiatives.
  • Monitor staff compliance with hospital policies, safety guidelines, and quality assurance procedures.

Operations Management

  • Ensure availability of continuous medical coverage for the specialty section.
  • Approve and monitor external referral laboratory send-out tests.
  • Support laboratory systems setup, application testing, and resolution of operational issues.
  • Participate in committee work and departmental administrative responsibilities.

Test Development & Innovation

  • Develop, evaluate, and validate new laboratory tests in molecular genetics, molecular pathology, genomics, oncology, and bioinformatics.
  • Build and optimize sequencing pipelines, analysis workflows, algorithms, and customized bioinformatics tools.
  • Implement and maintain bioinformatics infrastructure supporting large-scale genomic technologies.
  • Design and support web-based tools for querying biological databases.

Training, Education & Research

  • Supervise and participate in training programs for staff, students, interns, and residents.
  • Contribute to continuous professional development for faculty and laboratory professionals.
  • Participate in data analysis, research activities, and preparation of scientific reports and publications.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Medical degree with internship and residency completion, or a PhD in a related field.
  • Certification by the American Board of Pathology (or equivalent).
  • Valid licensure to practice.

Experience

  • Minimum of five years post-residency experience in the specialty.
  • Proven managerial capability in a tertiary-care environment, preferably in a CAP-accredited facility.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in English and Arabic.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and laboratory information systems.
  • Ability to make complex diagnostic decisions.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under stress, participate in on-call duties, and perform prolonged standing or sitting.
