Position Summary

The Radiation Safety Specialist establishes, operates and manages the radiation safety program at KAUST, including assessing potential exposures to radiation. He / She supports university staff, faculty, and students in the management of Campus HSE compliance. The scope may be extended to business partners and industry collaborators when deemed applicable.

Major Responsibilities

  • Ensure regulatory compliance of radiation safety program with local regulations and international guidelines KAUST subscribes to.
  • Ensures a safe working research and educational environment with respect to the use of radiation for research at KAUST.
  • Establish Radiation Safety Program in accordance with regulatory requirements and KAUST operational needs.
  • Manage Radiation Safety Program to support undisrupted radiation research activities; obtaining all necessary licenses and permits.
  • Serves as the principal technical resource to departmental and campus management on matters relating to radiation safety.
  • Review and approve radioactive material purchase request orders.
  • Reviews research protocols and safety plans involving use of radiation.
  • Writes reports and other forms of scientific or technical documentation, including revising the University Radiation Safety Program, Manual, and other documents as appropriate.

Competencies

  • Extensive knowledge of university research-related radiation safety standards and codes.
  • Skill in operation and maintenance of radiation monitoring and testing equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific or public health field.
  • Membership in a relevant professional organization preferred.
  • KSA Radiation Protection Officer training preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum six (6) years of professional experience including program development in radiation safety at universities or another research environment.
