Position Summary
The Radiation Safety Specialist establishes, operates and manages the radiation safety program at KAUST, including assessing potential exposures to radiation. He / She supports university staff, faculty, and students in the management of Campus HSE compliance. The scope may be extended to business partners and industry collaborators when deemed applicable.
Major Responsibilities
- Ensure regulatory compliance of radiation safety program with local regulations and international guidelines KAUST subscribes to.
- Ensures a safe working research and educational environment with respect to the use of radiation for research at KAUST.
- Establish Radiation Safety Program in accordance with regulatory requirements and KAUST operational needs.
- Manage Radiation Safety Program to support undisrupted radiation research activities; obtaining all necessary licenses and permits.
- Serves as the principal technical resource to departmental and campus management on matters relating to radiation safety.
- Review and approve radioactive material purchase request orders.
- Reviews research protocols and safety plans involving use of radiation.
- Writes reports and other forms of scientific or technical documentation, including revising the University Radiation Safety Program, Manual, and other documents as appropriate.
Competencies
- Extensive knowledge of university research-related radiation safety standards and codes.
- Skill in operation and maintenance of radiation monitoring and testing equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written English skills.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific or public health field.
- Membership in a relevant professional organization preferred.
- KSA Radiation Protection Officer training preferred.
Experience
- Minimum six (6) years of professional experience including program development in radiation safety at universities or another research environment.
