A QA/QC Engineer – Concrete Restoration is responsible for ensuring that concrete repair and restoration work meets project specifications, quality standards, and applicable codes.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Reviewing project specifications, drawings, and method statements.
- Preparing and implementing the project’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) plan.
- Inspecting surface preparation before repairs (e.g., concrete removal, cleaning, reinforcement treatment).
- Verifying repair materials such as repair mortars, bonding agents, grouts, epoxies, and protective coatings.
- Monitoring application of concrete repair and restoration systems.
- Conducting and witnessing quality tests, such as:
- Slump and compressive strength tests (where applicable)
- Pull-off (bond strength) tests
- Rebar inspection
- Coating thickness measurements
- Surface profile and moisture testing
- Preparing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), checklists, and Request for Inspection (RFI) documents.
- Maintaining quality records, material approvals, test reports, and non-conformance reports (NCRs).
- Coordinating with consultants, clients, and site engineers for inspections and approvals.
- Ensuring compliance with standards such as:
- ASTM
- ACI (especially ACI 562, ACI 546)
- EN 1504 (Concrete Repair Products and Systems)
- Project specifications and local authority requirements.
- Identifying defects, recommending corrective actions, and verifying that repairs meet acceptance criteria.
Required skills
- Knowledge of concrete deterioration mechanisms (corrosion, carbonation, chloride attack, sulfate attack, cracking).
- Experience with repair systems from manufacturers such as Sika, Fosroc, Mapei, BASF/Master Builders Solutions, or equivalent.
- Ability to read structural drawings and repair details.
- Familiarity with QA/QC documentation and inspection procedures.
- Strong communication and reporting skills.
Typical qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
- 3–10+ years of experience in concrete repair/restoration or civil construction QA/QC.
- Certifications such as ISO 9001 Internal Auditor, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician, or NACE/AMPP coating inspection certification (depending on project requirements) are often advantageous.
This role is common on projects involving bridges, parking structures, tunnels, marine structures, buildings, industrial facilities, and infrastructure rehabilitation.
