Job Purpose

Design, configure, test, and maintain protection and control systems for high-voltage substations (up to 380kV – OHTL – UGC). The Protection Engineer ensures the reliability, selectivity, and speed of protection relays and schemes, including fault analysis and coordination studies. The role is critical for safeguarding substation equipment, preventing blackouts, and ensuring compliance with utility and international standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design, calculate, and implement protection coordination studies for transmission substations (13.8kV, 33kV, 110kV, 115kV, 132kV, 380kV – OHTL – UGC ).
  • Configure, test, and commission numerical protection relays (e.g., transformer, feeder, busbar, and distance protection).
  • Prepare protection setting files, logic diagrams, and control schematics.
  • Perform secondary injection testing, trip circuit checks, and end-to-end protection testing.
  • Analyze fault records and disturbance oscillography to troubleshoot protection misoperations.
  • Ensure all protection schemes comply with local utility standards (e.g., SEC, NEOM, Aramco) and IEC/IEEE regulations.
  • Coordinate with utility protection teams to match grid codes and relay setting requirements.
  • Supervise and mentor site technicians on protection testing procedures and safety.
  • Conduct SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) and support SCADA integration of protection devices.
  • Document test results, as-built relay settings, and provide technical reports to the P&C Manager.
  • Work safely in high-voltage environments, strictly following LOTO and switching procedures.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Qualifications & Educational Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Power or Protection focus preferred).
  • Proven experience in protection relay configuration, testing, and coordination for HV/EHV substations.
  • In-depth knowledge of protection schemes (overcurrent, differential, distance, breaker failure, auto-reclose).
  • Familiarity with protection relays from major vendors (Siemens, ABB, GE, SEL, Schneider).
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, SV) is an advantage.
  • Understanding of safety standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA).
