JOB SUMMARY

The Program Director is responsible for the leadership, governance, and successful delivery of large-scale, complex, and strategic programs. This role ensures alignment with organizational objectives, oversees multiple interdependent projects, and manages stakeholders to achieve agreed outcomes in terms of scope, schedule, budget, and benefits realisation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Managing the team across a broad portfolio of accounts/projects. Define responsibilities, set direction, and allocate tasks with the portfolio delivery team and the wider team.
  • Defining and implementing standards and processes for project execution.
  • Successfully implementing recovery for project crisis situations.
  • Conduct timely, fair and accurate project reviews for direct reports, using the standard templates, where appropriate.
  • Build strong relationships with both clients and all parts of the business to define viable approaches/methodologies in line with relevant industry standards and best practices.
  • Support the new business teams to help make the best of new business opportunities.
  • Represent delivery at a management level including at regular management meetings.
  • Seek to maximize revenue and margin across multiple projects/accounts through project delivery (profit margin).
  • Hold responsibility for the quality of the project deliverables and communications across delivery.
  • Draw on client experiences and external trends to advise others on how to best meet our clients’ current and future needs.
  • Keep teams and individuals updated on performance against our goals. Understand and communicate what it means.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and communicate program vision, objectives, and roadmap.
  • Ensure alignment with organizational strategy and business outcomes.
  • Provide leadership to program managers, project managers, and cross-functional teams.

Governance & Oversight

  • Establish program governance structures, reporting frameworks, and decision-making protocols.
  • Monitor program performance against KPIs, budget, and risk tolerances.
  • Report progress, risks, and issues to the Executive Sponsor and Steering Committee.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Manage senior stakeholders, vendors, and partners.
  • Build strong relationships across the organization to enable collaboration.
  • Ensure transparent communication and timely escalation of issues.

Financial & Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the program budget.
  • Ensure optimal resource allocation and utilization across projects.
  • Drive cost optimization and value realization.

Risk, Issues & Compliance

  • Proactively identify, manage, and mitigate program risks and issues.
  • Ensure adherence to compliance, regulatory, and quality standards.
  • Champion continuous improvement in delivery practices.

Benefits Realization

  • Ensure delivery of agreed business benefits and value.
  • Monitor performance against benefit realization plans.
  • Drive adoption and transition to BAU operations.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS and EXPERIENCE

A Program Director has the ability to focus on details and technicalities while simultaneously retaining a comprehensive vision of the big picture. They must work well under pressure, have great interpersonal and influencing skills and be able to juggle several different projects and responsibilities with ease and professionalism.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, IT, Engineering, or related field (postgraduate qualification desirable).
  • 12+ years of experience in project/program management, with at least 5 years in senior leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex, multi-year transformation programs.
  • Certification in program/project management methodologies (e.g., MSP, PgMP, PRINCE2, PMP, Agile).
  • Experience working in large-scale, multi-vendor environments.
