About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Primary Reading & Literacy Specialist to lead and promote a vibrant culture of reading across our primary school.
This is a unique opportunity for a passionate educator who believes that reading is at the heart of every child’s success. The successful candidate will work closely with school leaders, teachers, pupils and parents to develop outstanding reading provision, manage and promote the school library, deliver targeted literacy interventions, and foster a lifelong love of books and learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead initiatives that promote a whole-school culture of reading.
- Manage, develop and promote the school library as an engaging learning hub.
- Organise reading campaigns, author events, book fairs, reading challenges and literacy celebrations.
- Support teachers in embedding high-quality reading strategies across the curriculum.
- Deliver targeted literacy interventions for pupils requiring additional support.
- Assess pupils’ reading abilities, monitor progress, and use assessment data to inform interventions.
- Promote guided reading, independent reading, phonics and reading comprehension across the primary phase.
- Curate high-quality reading resources and ensure the library collection remains current, diverse and engaging.
- Develop systems to monitor library usage, reading engagement and pupil progress.
- Work collaboratively with curriculum leaders, class teachers and the Inclusion Department to improve literacy outcomes.
- Encourage parental involvement in reading through workshops, home-reading initiatives and community engagement.
- Utilise educational technology and digital reading platforms to enhance pupils’ reading experiences.
- Contribute to the wider life of the school through enrichment activities and professional learning.
Essential Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Library & Information Science, Literacy, or a related field.
- Recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience within a British curriculum school is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of early reading, phonics, guided reading, reading comprehension and literacy development.
- Experience planning and delivering literacy interventions.
- A passion for children’s literature and creating engaging reading environments.
- Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyse assessment data and implement strategies that improve pupil outcomes.
Desirable
- Experience managing or developing a school library.
- Experience using digital library and reading platforms.
- Experience leading literacy or reading improvement initiatives.
- Knowledge of evidence-informed reading instruction.
- Confidence in planning school-wide literacy events and campaigns.
