Highways Engineer – North London – £28.50 per hour Umbrella
A North London Local Authority is seeking an experienced Highways Engineer to join its Planned Maintenance Team. This is an excellent opportunity for a highways professional with proven experience in delivering highway maintenance and footway renewal projects within a busy urban environment.
Working as part of a dedicated highways team, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of planned highway maintenance schemes from inception through to completion. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, project management capability, financial control, and contract administration skills to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on time, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and deliver highway maintenance projects from initial survey and design through to construction and completion.
- Undertake highway inspections, condition surveys, and site assessments.
- Design and deliver multiple footway renewal schemes simultaneously.
- Prepare technical drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and project documentation.
- Manage project budgets and ensure effective financial control across individual schemes.
- Supervise contractors on site and monitor the quality of works delivered.
- Administer contracts and ensure compliance with relevant standards, specifications, and health and safety requirements.
- Liaise with internal departments, contractors, stakeholders, and members of the public throughout project delivery.
- Provide technical advice and recommendations relating to highway maintenance and improvement works.
Requirements
- HNC, BSc, BEng in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience.
- Proven experience delivering highway maintenance and footway renewal projects.
- Strong understanding of highway engineering principles, project management, contract management, and site supervision.
- Experience managing budgets and controlling project expenditure.
- Ability to work effectively across multiple schemes simultaneously.
- Knowledge of relevant highways legislation, standards, and industry best practice.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
